The park uniquely hosts some endemic flora and fauna that cannot be found anywhere on earth, hence called the “centre of endemism.” The pristine vegetation has a closed canopy cover, and woodland and moorland at higher altitudes. The park is honoured to be the Galapagos of Africa and one of the world’s few remaining “biodiversity hotspots”.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park, located in Tanzania, is a biodiversity hotspot renowned for its lush forests, rugged mountains, and rich variety of wildlife. As part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, it is one of Africa’s most ecologically significant areas, home to numerous endemic species, including unique primates like the Udzungwa paramilitary colobus. The park offers breathtaking waterfalls, scenic hiking trails, and vibrant ecosystems, making it a top destination for nature lovers, hikers, and conservationists seeking to explore pristine tropical habitats and enjoy diverse flora and fauna.
The area was gazetted as a National Park in 1992, encompassing approximately 1,990 square kilometres. The name “Udzungwa” derives from “Wadsungwa,” referring to one of the native sub-tribes of the Hehe people who historically inhabited the lower slopes of the mountains.
Recognised as part of the Eastern Arc Mountain chain, the park’s conservation efforts aim to preserve its endemic species, lush forests, and scenic landscapes. Before its designation as a national park, the area was recognised for its ecological significance and as a crucial site for scientific research and biodiversity conservation. Since its establishment, Udzungwa Mountains National Park has become a vital sanctuary for wildlife and a key area for ecological preservation in Tanzania.

These attractions make Udzungwa Mountains National Park a prime destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and ecological enthusiasts.
The best time to visit Udzungwa Mountains National Park is during the dry seasons, typically from June to October and December to February.
