Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi National Park is a protected area in northeastern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. It covers approximately 3,234 square kilometres and is renowned for its diverse wildlife and rich biodiversity. The park is part of the larger Selous ecosystem and is a crucial habitat for endangered species such as the black rhinoceros and the African wild dog. Mkomazi features a mixture of savannah, riverine woodland, and mountainous terrain, making it a key destination for conservation efforts and eco-tourism. The park also plays a vital role in protecting water catchment areas and supporting local communities through sustainable tourism.

The Park is in a beautiful setting with the Pare and Usambara mountains towering above its boundaries. Depending on the weather, Mount Kilimanjaro can also be seen from the park. To the south, the Pare and Usambara mountains form a dramatic backdrop. To the north, Kenya’s vast Tsavo National Park shares a border with Mkomazi, making common ground for migratory herds of elephant, oryx and zebra during the wet season. It forms one of Earth’s largest and most important protected ecosystems with Tsavo.

Mkomazi National Park

Park History

Mkomazi derives its name from the Pare-ethnic language; “Mko and Mazi”. “Mko” means a traditional tiny wooden spoon used by the Pare people for eating, and “Mazi” means water. This implies that the water in the Park is hardly enough to fill up the wooden spoon. It covers an area of 3,245 sq km.

Mkomazi National Park has a rich history that dates back to its initial establishment as a game reserve in 1951, primarily to protect local wildlife and serve as a sanctuary for various species. Over the years, it has faced challenges such as poaching and habitat degradation, threatening its biodiversity. Recognising its ecological importance, the Tanzanian government designated it as a national park in 2006, transforming it into a protected area focused on conservation and sustainable tourism. In recent decades, conservation organisations, including the Northern Rangelands Trust and the Zoological Society of London, have partnered with the Tanzanian government to rehabilitate the park, reintroduce species like the black rhinoceros and the wild dog, and enhance anti-poaching measures. This ongoing effort aims to restore Mkomazi to its former ecological vitality and ensure the survival of its endangered species.

Best Time to Visit Mkomazi National Park

The best time to visit Mkomazi National Park is during the dry season, typically from June to October. During these months, wildlife sightings are more frequent and easier because animals gather around water sources, and the vegetation is less dense, providing clearer views. The weather is generally cooler and sunnier, making game drives more comfortable. The dry season is also ideal for birdwatching and experiencing the park’s natural beauty. The rainy season, from November to May, can make roads muddy and difficult to access, but it’s also a time when the park’s landscape is lush and vibrant, and migratory birds are more active.
