Itineraries
Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Nyerere (Selous) + Rufiji Boat Safari.
Start your day with an early morning drive, navigating the 6-hour transit from the coast to the expansive wilderness of Nyerere National Park. Check into your accommodation upon arrival, refuel with lunch, and prepare for an afternoon boat safari along the deep channels of the Rufiji River. This waterway is famously dense with wildlife, allowing visitors to view plenty of resident hippos, crocodiles, and a prolific array of specialized waterfowl and birds of prey hunting along the shoreline before heading back to camp for the evening.

Day 2: Full day game drive in Nyerere National Park
After breakfast, load into your safari vehicle for a full-day game drive through the remarkably diverse landscapes of Nyerere National Park. The reserve is exceptionally rich in wildlife, giving you the perfect opportunity to spot Tanzania’s top iconic species in a single day. Keep your camera ready as you scout the plains and woodlands for lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, impalas, and warthogs. Your expert guide will also loop past the park’s major lakes and riverbeds, where you can watch countless hippos and crocodiles interacting in their natural environment before wrapping up your day’s adventure.

Day 3: Drive to Kilwa Masoko (The gateway to the ruins).
After coffee, a wilderness walking safari is the most exciting experience, unique in Tanzania, accompanied by armed rangers. Back to the camp for breakfast and after that drive to Kilwa, town Kilwa, as such, is divided into three different towns. Kilwa Kivinje, Kilwa Masoko, Kilwa Kisiwani, with Songo Mnara and Sanje Ya Kiti. Kilwa Masoko has the least exciting history-wise, but the modern town right now, the centre of operations, and the location of all modern-day facilities. The others are the places to go for historical reasons.

Day 4: Kilwa Kisiwani Ruins Tour
After breakfast, take a local dhow to Kilwa of the Island to visit the old ruins. Kilwa Kisiwani is where one will find the greatest collection of ruins. Directly on the Northern shore, one will find the old Omani Fort, built on the foundations of the old Portuguese fort in the early 19th Century, where an old wooden door remains.
The Big Mosque is from the 12th Century and was extended up to the 15th Century. It was said to be the largest mosque in East Africa. The Great House, located south of the mosque, was once a complex building, most likely Sultan’s palace. Four graves are in it, of which one is rumoured to be of a Sultan. Back to Masoko by dhow for dinner.

Day 5: Return to Dar es Salaam.
After breakfast, we visit Kilwa Kivinje, 30k north of Kilwa Masoko. The town has many old colonial buildings and crumbling remains of ancient Omani buildings. The Old German Boma in Kilwa Kivinje overlooks the waterfront and is the town’s oldest building. Kilwa Kivinje is a 19th Century Arabian slave and ivory trading town from which southern caravans started into the interior of Africa. On the decline of Arab rule towards the end of the 19th century, the German colonial government constructed a fort and enlarged the town. Then after visiting all the sites we drive back to Dar es Salaam.
