Day 1: Arusha town to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (1,500m to 2,514m)

Your adventure begins at Momella Gate, where you’ll register and meet your guides and porters. The hike starts through grasslands and montane forest, where wildlife such as giraffes, buffalo, and colobus monkeys are frequently spotted. The trail passes scenic waterfalls and forest clearings. After 4-6 hours of trekking, you arrive at Miriakamba Hut, situated at 2,514 meters, with facilities for resting and acclimatisation.

Day 2:Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (2,514m to 3,570m)

Today, the trail ascends through dense forest, with a shift to bamboo and moss-covered trees. You may spot birdlife like turacos and hornbills. A highlight is the Mgongo wa Tembo viewpoint, offering sweeping views of the crater. After 3-5 hours of hiking, you reach Saddle Hut at 3,570 meters, nestled between Mount Meru’s summit and Little Meru. A short optional trek to Little Meru (3,820m) for acclimatisation and stunning views is recommended.

Day 3:Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (4,566m) and descent

Early morning, the climb begins around 1:00 AM with a steep ascent from Saddle Hut. The trail includes narrow ridges and crater views, passing Rhino Point and Cobra Point. The summit, Socialist Peak, at 4,566 meters, offers breathtaking sunrise views of Kilimanjaro, the crater, and the Rift Valley. After admiring the scenery, descend to Saddle Hut for rest and breakfast, then continue down to Momella Gate and transfer back to Arusha.

Clothing

  • Lightweight, moisture-wicking base layers
  • Insulating layers (fleece or down jacket) for cold mornings and evenings
  • Waterproof jacket or rain poncho
  • Warm hat and gloves for summiting early mornings
  • Sun hat or cap for daytime protection
  • Trekking pants and shorts
  • T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts
  • Sleepwear and personal toiletries
