I recently volunteered as a registered nurse in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The majority of my days were committed to working at a local hospital, however, I arrived from the United States with one goal to be accomplished in my free time – to go on an African Safari. I previously had no information regarding what companies offered the best value, experience, or safety for that matter. Fortunately, I was referred by a friend to Kanuth Adventure Safaris. Kanuth was highly recommended, the price was extremely reasonable, and all inclusive. I joined a group, consisting of eight other volunteers

We departed from a convenient meeting location in Dar. Kanuth was well spoken, polite, and constantly inquired of the group, as to what he could do to make our Safari a memorable experience. We arrived at Mikumi National Park that afternoon and almost immediately, saw zebras, elephants, and giraffes. It was amazing! Kanuth consistently managed to find the best position in order to observe, photograph, and quite simply, be in awe of these wonderful animals. We were fortunate enough to come within a stone’s throw of both a male and female lion. They were peacefully resting and nuzzling each other until both rose and walked right between our two vehicles. The photos I snapped are incredible!

In addition to Mikumi, the two hotels we stayed at were excellent. The rooms were clean, the locations were safe, and the staff offered well prepared meals at the hotel restaurants. Following our adventure in Mikumi, we traveled further South on Saturday afternoon. We toured a rural village. The children readily approached us shouting “Mzungu! Mzungu!” It was as authentic as any African experience I had in Tanzania. We completed a hike in a tropical climate prior to visiting the village. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable.

On Sunday morning, we set off on a longer trek, eventually climbing to the peak of the most beautiful waterfall I’ve ever set eyes on. We arrived back in Dar later Sunday evening. I can honestly say that I have never had such an amazing experience in the span of three days. I highly recommend Kanuth Adventure Safaris. By the end of the Safari, I learned more about the geography, culture, and wildlife of Tanzania, than a lifetime of reading, on the subject, could ever show me. In addition, I made a lifelong friend of Kanuth Tarimo.
